The 550 Maranello gave Ferrari back a front-engined V12 two-seater in 1996 — and gave Nike’s design studio the vocabulary for one of its most recognizable basketball shoes. Editorial visualization: Exotic Car News.

The 550 Maranello that Tinker Hatfield studied while designing the Air Jordan XIV vanished from public view for 24 years. It resurfaced in California this spring, the reserve has already been met, and it sells on September 30.

Editor’s note on imagery: the photographs in this article are photorealistic editorial visualizations of a 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello in Rosso Barchetta. They are not photographs of chassis 108712; official images of the auction car are published on the Joopiter listing.

What You Need to Know

  • The Michael Jordan Ferrari 550 Maranello — chassis 108712 — is being offered by Joopiter in an online-only sale titled Driven to Greatness. Bidding runs September 15–30, 2026 against a $700,000–$1.3 million estimate. As of September 21 the lot showed one bid at the $500,000 opening, with the reserve marked met — so the car sells.
  • The car was delivered to Jordan in May 1997, roughly two weeks before his fifth championship, and left his hands in December 2002. It was untraceable for the next 24 years until CURATED located it in a private California collection in May 2026.
  • The same car informed the Air Jordan XIV — the shoe Jordan wore on June 14, 1998 when he hit the jumper that ended the Bulls dynasty. That connection, not the 550’s own market, is what the estimate is built on.

For twenty-four years, the most culturally consequential Ferrari 550 Maranello in America was a rumor with a license plate attached. Everyone in the collector world knew the plate — MJ 5, Illinois — and nobody knew where the car had gone after it was traded in at a suburban Chicago dealership in December 2002.

It is now on the block. Chassis 108712, Michael Jordan’s Rosso Barchetta 1997 550 Maranello, is being sold by Joopiter, the auction house Pharrell Williams founded, in an online-only sale that opened September 15 and closes at 7:02 p.m. Eastern on September 30. The estimate is $700,000 to $1.3 million, and bidding opened at $500,000.

The car surfaced in May, when Miami-based vintage supercar dealer CURATED tracked it to a private collection in California. Co-founder John Temerian has said his team spent years on the hunt, working partial chassis numbers pulled from decades-old forum photographs against Ferrari’s historical dealer records. It is the second Jordan Ferrari the firm has pulled out of hiding: in April 2025 it announced the recovery of his 1992 512 TR, chassis 1341, which had been missing since a 2010 auction appearance.

The Car Jordan Actually Specified

Ferrari delivered 108712 on May 29, 1997, through Foreign Cars Italia in North Carolina. Jordan ordered it in Rosso Barchetta — a darker, more burgundy red than the standard Rosso Corsa — over tan leather, on chrome Speedline five-spoke wheels. Two weeks later the Bulls closed out Utah, and the car was photographed leaving the United Center.

The detail that matters most to a collector is the one Jordan had changed. At 6-foot-6 he did not fit a 550 as Maranello built it, so the driver’s seat was rebuilt with extended rails and thinner padding to claw back headroom and legroom. That modification is still in the car. Celebrity provenance is usually a paper argument — a warranty card, a photograph, a registration. Here the ownership is physically built into the seat frame, which is a materially harder thing to fake and a materially easier thing to sell.

The documentation is unusually tidy for a car that spent a quarter-century off the radar. Joopiter’s lot includes the original factory warranty card signed by Jordan and Ferrari’s own dealer records — exactly the kind of factory paperwork that now underpins collector-car value — and the chain reads cleanly from Foreign Cars Italia to Jordan, to Lake Forest Sportscars in Illinois on December 4, 2002, to the California owner, to CURATED.

How a Ferrari Became a Basketball Shoe

Tinker Hatfield’s brief for the fourteenth Air Jordan was, essentially, to put the car on a foot. The result is the most literal automotive translation in the line: breathable ports lifted from the 550’s fender louvres, quilted panelling drawn from the interior, and a Jumpman set inside a shield that reads as a deliberate nod to the badge on the Ferrari’s nose. Nike put the shoe on shelves in October 1998.

By then it had already done the only job that mattered. On June 14, 1998, in Game 6 of the Finals in Salt Lake City, Jordan scored 45 points and hit the jumper over Bryon Russell that made it 87–86 and delivered the Bulls’ sixth title. He was wearing the XIV. The 550 appears again in The Last Dance in 2020, parked alongside his Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet and a C4 Corvette ZR-1 — which is roughly when the search for it intensified, and roughly when the market began to understand what it would be worth if anyone found it.

Pricing the Michael Jordan Ferrari 550 Maranello Against the Model’s Market

Strip the name off and the numbers are sober. Hagerty puts a fair-condition 550 Maranello near $142,000 and a concours car near $298,000. The public record for the model stands at $648,500, set in August 2026 by a 1998 example with 848 kilometers — a delivery-mileage car, effectively a time capsule, and still comfortably below this lot’s low estimate.

So Joopiter is asking the market to pay somewhere between two and a half and four and a half times concours money for a driven, 18,500-mile car. Every dollar of that gap is Jordan. That is not unreasonable on its face — the April 2023 sale of the Air Jordan 13s he wore in Game 2 of the 1998 Finals, at $2.238 million through Sotheby’s, established that Jordan’s last championship is its own asset class — but it does make this a memorabilia lot with a V12 rather than a Ferrari lot with a story.

ECN Analysis: The Format Is the Risk

The car is not the question here. The sales channel is.

A lot like this normally goes under the hammer in a room — Monterey, Scottsdale, Amelia — where two determined bidders and an auctioneer can manufacture a number nobody expected. Joopiter is running it online across sixteen days, which trades that theater for reach. It is a rational choice given who the buyer probably is: a sneaker collector, a sports memorabilia investor, or a brand, not necessarily someone who already owns four Ferraris. Those buyers live online, and Jordan’s commercial reach now extends well past his own garage — he also co-owns a NASCAR Cup team.

The cost is momentum. As of September 21, with nine days left to run, the lot showed a single bid at its $500,000 opening — and Joopiter’s listing marks the reserve as met. That settles the binary question: this car sells on September 30. What it does not settle is the number. A lot resting on one bid two-thirds of the way through its window is leaning hard on a late burst of competition rather than the sustained back-and-forth a live room produces, and the gap between $500,000 and the $700,000 low estimate has to be closed by bidders who mostly have not shown up yet.

The other open question is what happens to the provenance premium once it is paid. Celebrity cars have a habit of resetting to model value on the second sale, when the emotional buyer becomes the seller. The countervailing argument, and it is a strong one, is that this is not merely a car a famous person owned. It is a documented design source for a mass-market object that tens of millions of people recognize, tied to a specific, dated, universally known sporting moment.

That is the same force now pulling a generation toward the objects of its own childhood, and there are very few cars that sit in it. It is what CURATED spent a decade chasing, and it is what the estimate is really pricing.

Why It Matters

The Michael Jordan Ferrari 550 Maranello is testing two things at once. The first is whether a Ferrari can be valued as cultural artifact rather than as machinery — whether the market will underwrite a 4x multiple on the strength of a shoe and a jump shot. The second is whether an online-only platform can clear seven figures on a car without the pressure of a live room.

If both work, expect the recovery business to accelerate. There are a lot of missing celebrity cars from the 1990s, and the discovery process is now a proven commercial exercise rather than a hobbyist’s pursuit. If the lot stalls under its reserve, the message is narrower and just as useful: the provenance story has to be bought in a room, in person, with someone else bidding against you.

Bidding closes at 7:02 p.m. Eastern on September 30.
